What is Doula?

The word "doula" comes from an ancient Greek word meaning "a woman who serves" and is now used to refer to a trained and experienced professional who provides continuous physical, emotional and informational support to the mother before, during and just after birth; or who provides emotional and practical support during the postpartum period. Studies have shown that when doulas attend birth, labours are shorter with fewer complications, babies are healthier and mothers feel more positive about their birthing experience and their babies.

Doula Support for Parents

JoAnne and DaisyBirth is one of the most awe inspiring and powerful moments in life. Birth is full of challenges; new information and emotions, love, fear, hope, strength, courage and risk. Having a doula for support provides so much for the expecting parents. Having someone who you know and trust you’re your birth, who doesn’t leave your side, brings confidence, a sense of safety which helps the labouring woman relax into her birth and allows her partner to relax and support her.

"My doulas role was to be my constant. She proved to be my one constant strength throughout the pregnancy. As I went through all my battles, she was there to support me, encourage me, and be a sounding board for me. She was strong and calm."

"On the day of labour, I had my husband supporting me for some time, before I decided to call my doula. As soon as she arrived, I felt relieved, she was immediately there for me, and she helped share the load with my husband, so that it was not all left to him to support me."

Become a Doula

Being a Doula is a calling rather than a job, as a Doula you are in a unique position to dwell in the mystery and miracle of birth and support other people in that miracle. Life, love, courage, fear, trust and self-discovery and transformation are all inherent in the birth process.

We believe working with and understanding your life and birth experiences will enable you to work more effectively with women in the momentous occasion of giving birth. With this in mind, the Dial-a-Doula training incorporates knowledge of the physical and emotional aspects of birth, understanding of how to provide support to women and their families as well as your own personal development as a woman.
